N1 - Funding Information: The Malawi team initiated and participates in the SIOP Africa/PODC collaborative Wilms tumor project. This regional collaborative project aims to increase survival of children with Wilms tumor in the nine participating institutes in line with the principles discussed above. The initiative is supported financially by World Child Cancer, the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) and the Dutch childhood cancer parents’ organization. An adapted consensus treatment guideline is implemented in the participating institutions with emphasis on social support to enable parents to complete treatment, adequate supportive care and reliable ultrasonography. The Wilms tumor example described above demonstrates how treatment developments in the resource rich world can be applied in a resource and infrastructure appropriate yet effective way in a low-income setting and may be used as a model for other tumor types. We hope these efforts will strengthen the local multidisciplinary teams and positively impact other aspects of childhood cancer and general pediatric care.
